Burley keen to see Marshall in action

Marshall was promoted to number two in the full national team squad in the wake of the incidents which saw Allan McGregor - along with Barry Ferguson - informed they were unlikely to play for Scotland again. While McGregor had been challenging Craig Gordon for the gloves - and was even given the nod ahead of the Sunderland keeper for the World Cup qualifier against Holland - Marshall has so far been left kicking his heels in the stand. He has made just two appearances for the Scots, both back in 2004, and Burley is now keen to see him in action against Northern Ireland's second string on May 6 at Broadwood. He said: "David has been involved with every squad while I've been manager. "He hasn't had a full game, he hasn't been part of it so this gives him the opportunity to play international football. "He will be our number two choice now so it's ideal for him to get an international game under his belt." Everton goalkeeper Iain Turner has also been included in the squad for the B international. Burley added: "Iain Turner is a young player coming through and is on loan at Nottingham Forest. "Everton think highly of him and it will give me an opportunity to see him in training as well." As well as players plying their trade south of the border, the clash with the Irish will provide Burley with the opportunity to assess players closer to home. Old Firm duo Steven Naismith and Mark Wilson have had a series of injury problems seek while at Rangers and Celtic respectively. But Burley sees such internationals as the ideal opportunity to help them resurrect their Scotland careers. He said: "Steven Naismith did terrifically with the under-21s, he was really outstanding but he is too old for that now. "He had a cruciate injury, which takes a long time to recover from, but he is fully fit now and that gives me the opportunity to have a look at him now. "Mark Wilson is a player I've seen a lot of at Celtic. Of late, he maybe hasn't been able to establish himself regularly in the Celtic team because of the quality. "But he is a young player, who is certainly capable given a run in any team of pushing into the Scotland squad." Despite a crucial Old Firm derby taking place on May 9, Walter Smith and Gordon Strachan have not placed any restrictions on the involvement of either player with the Scots. "I've spoken to Gordon and Walter and both were very pleased they have been included in the the squad," said Burley. "They are both young players with great potential and both players pushing to try to get a regular game in the team. "There is no doubt their quality is top class."
