Northampton Town manager Stuart Gray paid tribute to Ian Taylor after the veteran midfielder's final game ended in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town.
The 38-year-old former Port Vale, Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Derby County and Cobblers midfielder called time on his career after more than 550 appearances and received a standing ovation after being replaced on the hour mark in Friday's stalemate at Sixfields.
"Ian Taylor deserved his wonderful reception," Gray told the club's official website.
"We decided that it was fitting for Ian to end on a home game and that is why he will not be involved at Doncaster next week.
"There were a few Villa fans here and I think they enjoyed the night."
Meanwhile, Gray has revealed he has opened negations with some of the Cobblers' soon to be out-of-contract players.
"We have contract offers on the table to both Jason Crowe and Chris Doig," he continued.
"We want them to stay and have made them good offers and we are awaiting their answers. We hope they will stay but we will have to wait and see."
