Talking Point: Will 897m BT Deal Be Better For Lower League Clubs?
The Champions League television rights have been won exclusively by BT Sport from 2015 onwards
The deal dwarfs the current arrangement that UEFA have with Sky and ITV in the UK and will certainly mean more money for those clubs who regularly qualify for European competition. There has been some concern expressed that supporters will now have to pay to access televised games although BT Sport have said that the final and some other games involving English teams will be free to air every season. But for a club like Northampton Town, having live football on a terrestrial channel on Tuesday nights throughout the winter will have had a detrimental effect on attendances. Faced with venturing out in the cold for a League Two game or staying in the warm to watch Arsenal or Manchester United, some people will have opted for the latter. The effect game-by-game may have been small but even 100 people fewer through the gates can make a huge difference to finances.
