Davies snatches victory for Spireites

Craig Davies earned Chesterfield their first away win of the season as his second-half strike snatched a 2-1 victory at Northampton. The Spireites had to come from behind to take all three points after being outplayed and falling behind at Sixfields. The impressive Kevin Thornton was at the heart of all Northampton's best moves in the first half. Thornton went close on three occasions, while striker Billy McKay was foiled by goalkeeper Tommy Lee and then headed against the upright as the Cobblers looked for the breakthrough. It eventually came in first-half stoppage time when Lee failed to hold onto a Michael Jacobs drive and Thornton pounced to head home his fourth goal of the campaign. The midfielder twice went close in the second half although substitute Jack Lester should have equalised for Chesterfield shortly after coming on around the hour mark. The equaliser did arrive in the 71st minute when Northampton fell asleep at a corner and Dean Morgan made them pay from 12 yards. Davies then grabbed the winner four minutes later when Chesterfield caught Northampton on a quick break and he finished coolly, beating Chris Dunn from the edge of the box.
