Cobblers sack manager Gray
08 Sep 2009 - 10:27:57
Northampton Town have sacked manager Stuart Gray after the board cited a disappointing start to their League Two season.
Gray was at the helm of the Cobblers when they were relegated last season and had presided over three defeats from their first six games this term.
First-team coach Ian Sampson has been placed in caretaker charge at Sixfields.
"It is with a heavy heart that we, the club and Stuart Gray have come to this decision but it is necessary to consider what is in the best interests of the club both long term and to try and win promotion this season," chairman David Cardoza told the club's official website.
"We, the board of directors, gave Stuart every opportunity to strengthen the squad this summer and to build a squad capable of taking the club straight back up.
"Although Stuart brought some good players to the club our results and performances have been very disappointing for both the club and our very loyal supporters.
"We enjoyed some very good times under Stuart. Sixteen months ago he took us to one of our highest placings in the last 40 years and he has attracted some very good players to the club.
"There nearly always comes a time though when a manager has to move on for the good of the club and having reviewed our results and performances over an extended period we feel that time is now.
"We thank Stuart for the terrific work he has done for the club and wish him well for the future."
