The Case For The Cobblers Defence

19 November 2012 12:31
While the focus has been on Northampton's attacking strength there has been a solid base at the back this season

Aidy Boothroyd signalled his intent in the summer to get his side scoring goals and, firstly, Alex Nicholls and now Bayo Akinfenwa are making hay on a regular basis as the Cobblers climb steadily up the league table.

That attacking ambition has occasionally stretched the Town defence but Boothroyd clearly has some key men at the back.

While 21 players have started a league game to date this season, goalkeeper Lee Nicholls and defenders Kelvin Langmead and Joe Widdowson have started every league game and Ben Tozer all but one.

The occasional horror show such as the Barnet game means Northampton have conceded 17 goals away from home, as many as any other team in the top-half of League Two but have only let in 8 at home where they host Morecambe on Tuesday night.

"We're on the up here and we're moving forward," said the manager ahead of that game. "That doesn't mean we won't have a few steps backwards and some poor results.

"We've got a lot to be happy about, but you can't get carried away."
