Taking Stock: Final Defeat But A Good Season

If Northampton had finished just outside the play-offs or been beaten in the semi-final then they would have earned plaudits for a positive season on the back of successive battles against relegation out of the Football League.

The nature of their Wembley defeat has masked that for a couple of days but Aidy Boothroyd is correct to say that Town are 'a football club that's on the up.'Players will come and go over the summer as is the case across the divisions as shorter contracts and a quicker turnover of players becomes the norm. The Wembley reverse will certainly make Boothroyd even more determined to deliver promotion next time around and address the problems away from Sixfields which ultimately prevented a top-three finish.Clarke Carlisle has backed him to do so, telling BBC Radio Northampton: "I've no doubts we'll make even greater improvements next season."
