Southend 1-1 Northampton: Report

26 February 2011 17:59
Another draw for Cobblers Northampton made it six draws on the spin as they were held to a 1-1 draw by play-off-chasing Southend. Cobblers right-back John Johnson opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he charged upfield and fired into the bottom left-hand corner of the Southend goal from just outside the box. Yet Southend equalised seven minutes later when Barry Corr headed home a corner from Ryan Hall. The first half ended with Southend's Anthony Grant firing a rising shot over the bar and Johnson going just wide with a speculative 40-yard effort. Ben Tozer spurned a great chance to head Northampton back in front minutes after the restart, before Southend's Lee Sawyer fired a tame shot straight at goal following a good run from Grant. Both sides battled away to make the breakthrough again, but the defences remained on top as Northampton finished the stronger of the sides without being able to claim a winner.
