Sampson alarmed by Cobblers' display
Northampton manager Ian Sampson described his side's display in their 2-0 defeat at Macclesfield as "dreadful in every way".
Matty Hamshaw set up both goals with pinpoint corners. The first after 24 minutes was converted by Hamza Bencherif and the second by centre-back Nat Brown with a powerful downward header in the 70th minute.
Sampson was dismayed by the Cobblers' performance and warned his players they must improve.
He said: "It was an all round disappointing performance in every way. Everything we did was poor and it followed what was probably our best performance of the season against Chesterfield last week. We didn't get any points then, but we played so much better.
"This was just dreadful in every way. I've got some young players and we'll have to be patient with them, but they will also need a kick up the backside, you can't let them get away with a performance like that.
"I don't really have too much room to manoeuvre in terms of changing it round. I'd like to thank the fans for their continued support, they've always been fantastic. They've had a lot to cheer about recently with our performances against Liverpool, Bradford and Chesterfield, but we know we now owe them something."
