Northampton boss right to target steady progress

Aidy Boothroyd has warned fans not to expect an immediate leap from the relegation zone to being promotion contenders

The positive vibe generated by Boothroyd when he took over as Town boss towards the end of last year, coupled with what is set to be a busy summer in the transfer market, means the Cobblers are being talked about as top-six candidates.

While no-one could ever accuse Boothroyd of being unambitious however he has sought to stress this week that some steady progress at Sixfields would not go amiss.

'We don't want to be a boom and bust club,' he told the official NTFC website, while rightly highlighting the type of clubs who have dropped out of the Football League in recent seasons, many of whom are having a hard time finding their way back.

League Two promises to be as tough as ever next season with ambitious clubs coming up (Fleetwood), coming down (Chesterfield) and looking to push on (Rotherham United) and Northampton are a team that has finished within touching distance of relegation for the past two seasons.
