Shrimpers off the mark

Ryan Cresswell grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser as Southend picked up their first point of the season with a 3-3 draw at Northampton.

Alex Nicholls looked to have grabbed another late winner as Northampton twice came from behind to lead 3-2 until Cresswell popped up to earn a point.

Britt Assombalonga broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, taking advantage of a slip by Kelvin Langmead to beat Lee Nicholls via the upright.

Substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa equalised moments after coming off the bench, Clive Platt flicking on Joe Widdowson's 65th-minute cross for the burly striker to score from close range.

Kane Ferdinand put the visitors back in front in the 78th minute, firing home after Cobblers failed to clear.

But their lead only lasted one minute this time as David Artell shot home from close range after Cameron Belford failed to hold on to Chris Hackett's drive. And Nicholls put the Cobblers in front in the 84th minute when he headed home Langmead's chip.

But Cresswell was pushed up front late on and fired home the equaliser after Northampton failed to deal with a hopeful ball into the box.
