Bees pile misery on Cobblers

Ricky Holmes hit a second-half winner as Barnet maintained their recent revival with a crucial 2-1 victory at fellow strugglers Northampton.

The recalled Adebayo Akinfenwa gave the basement side the lead at the interval with his ninth goal of the season after 10 minutes, getting the final touch on Ben Harding's inswinging corner which had caught out Bees `keeper Dean Brill.

Barnet, however, could have been ahead as early as the first minute but Town's on-loan stopper Chris Weale smothered Izale McLeod's point-blank effort after he raced on to Brill's long clearance.

Yet it took Barnet just three second-half minutes to get on level terms. Cobblers failed to clear following a neat move and when the ball came back to Mark Byrne he curled a first-time effort around Weale and into the far corner of the net.

Akinfenwa should have restored Northampton's advantage in the 55th minute but he could only head straight at Brill from Lewis Young's cross.

McLeod missed a sitter at the other end when he rounded Weale only to see Ben Tozer head off the line.

But the visitors won it in the 69th minute when they opened up the home defence again and Holmes beat Weale at his near post with a snap-shot from 15 yards.
