Gulls hold Cobblers to stalemate

Torquay maintained their excellent form on the road with a point at Northampton who are still chasing their first home victory following a 0-0 draw here.

Both sides had several chances to take all three points with Northampton having the better of them especially in the second half.

Chris McPhee had a great opportunity midway through the first half for the visitors, but with just Sam Walker to beat he allowed the keeper to save the day.

Earlier Adebayo Akinfenwa missed a good chance when he failed to convert a cross from Lewis Young.

But the game opened up in the second half and chances came frequently at both ends. Keeper Bobby Olejnik was fortunate to get away with a slip shortly after the restart when he spilled a shot from the impressive Aaron Davies but Akinfenwa was unable to take advantage.

But the keeper redeemed himself by saving from a Michael Jacobs free-kick and then denied Young late on after he raced clear with just the keeper to beat.

In between McPhee had a goal-bound shot blocked by Kevin Longmead and the striker then saw his second attempt saved by Walker.

At the other end Akinfenwa headed over from a Davies corner and also saw another header blocked late on while Ben Tozer headed over in the final minute.

Torquay also went close late on with top scorer Lee Mansell twice having efforts blocked and also being foiled by Walker.
