Aidy Boothroyd threw strikers galore onto the pitch in a bid to claw back Redshaw's opener for the hosts at the Globe Arena but it was a defender who came up trumps to keep Town in 4th place in League Two.
With Port Vale falling away badly it is the Potteries side who now lie just two points above Northampton in the table.
The Cobblers are on the road again this Saturday when they face Wycombe Wanderers.
