The 21-year-old can play at right-back, centre-back or in midfield and made his first-team debut for Boro against Chelsea in October 2008.[LNB]Johnson has since gone on to play five games on loan with Tranmere and Cobblers caretaker boss Ian Sampson is delighted with his arrival.[LNB]Sampson said: "John is a tough lad with a very good attitude and we are pleased to have him here.[LNB]"He is a player who Malcolm Crosby obviously knows very well and he will increase the options available to us. He is a very good footballer and a player who I think will improve the squad.[LNB]"He jumped at the chance to come here and that is important. He is keen to come here, get stuck in and do well for us."[LNB]Northampton have also completed the signing of striker Courtney Herbert from Long Buckby after a successful trial period with the club.[LNB]The Cobblers are able to complete the signing outside the transfer window as Long Bucky play at a level that is not bound by such regulations.[LNB]Herbert, 20, has featured in two reserve matches, scoring once, during a two-week spell with the club.[LNB]"Courtney first caught my eye in pre-season," said Sampson.[LNB]"He stuck in my mind and I was keen to get him in to have a closer look, and he has done very well in his two weeks here. He is very quick, he is very direct and he knows where the goal is. He is different to the strikers we already have here and that is important.[LNB]"It is a big jump for him to come from working in the week and playing part time at Long Buckby to the Football League but he has all the attributes to be an exciting player. He is very raw at the moment but the club is willing to give him a chance and invest some time in him."[LNB][LNB]
