Aidy Boothroyd's second game in charge produced his first defeat thanks to goals from Craddock and Smalley in front of 7,517.
The Cobblers were always in the game until the second goal killed them off with just minutes remaining and Boothroyd will have seen plenty to work with as the busy festive period approaches.
