The 19-year-old had not featured for Northampton since New Year's Eve when he appeared as a substitute in the defeat by Swindon Town.
"His opportunities here would have been limited," Boothroyd told the official club website.
The Cobblers meanwhile take a watching brief on Tuesday night as a number of their relegation rivals are in League Two action.
