The 31-year-old central defender won promotion out of League Two last season before being released by Crewe Alexandra.
Earlier in the summer he agreed a deal to join Port Vale but has moved on quickly due to the continuing financial problems at Vale Park.
Believing he may have found the missing piece of his transfer jigsaw, Cobblers boss Aidy Boothroyd said: “I’ve had him down here a couple of times, I’ve bent his arm behind his back and sold the club to him.
“We’ve got a player who has been promoted three times, he’s a senior figure and he knows league two inside out."
