Bayo suspension blow for Cobblers

26 February 2009 13:49
The Cobblers striker was sent off along with Brighton defender Adam Virgo during Tuesday night's 1-1 draw at the Withdean Stadium, and both clubs subsequently appealed against the dismissals.[LNB]But the FA rejected both appeals and deemed the appeals as "having no prospect of success", adding a further match ban to each player, meaning Akinfenwa must miss the next four games and Virgo five.[LNB]A statement on the Cobblers's official website said: "We are very disappointed with this decision. Both clubs spent a lot of time reviewing the incident and paying the not insignificant fee for this appeal to be heard.[LNB]"The match referee confirmed on the evening that no punches were thrown, and his official report of the incident states that 'both players were grappling and wrestling violently on the ground.' DVD evidence does not support this view of events.[LNB]"As a club, we have a proud record of respect for referees and have not contested a red card for some considerable time. Given the extra game ban, the club will have to carefully consider whether the appeals system is worth considering for future incidents."[LNB][LNB]
