Virgil van Dijk Insists Liverpool Have Work to Do in Pursuit of Premier League Glory

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is keen for the club to remain grounded in their pursuit of a first Premier League crown, insisting in the aftermath of the 5-2 Merseyside derby win over Everton "we've won nothing yet".

The Reds maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a comprehensive win over their bitter rivals, which eventually cost Toffees boss Marco Silva his job.

Liverpool are eight points clear of surprise package Leicester, 11 ahead of Manchester City, but Van Dijk - who finished as runner-up in the prestigious 2019 Ballon d'Or competition - wants everybody at the club to remain focussed on what's to come in the future, particularly as the club face a run of ten fixtures in just 30 days.

“We are in a good situation we can't deny that - but we are not there yet,” he said, in quotes carried by the Mirror. “We never are satisfied, especially when the season is not even half way. We want to keep going and focus on the games ahead of us.

Van Dijk continued by praising fringe players Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri and Adam Lallana, who all came into the side to play starring roles in the win over Everton. Van Dijk acknowledges that squad depth is key to any success Liverpool will have, admitting that everybody has a part to play.

“The thing is we have to find a way to win every game we play whether it is with different players or different tactics we are always trying to find a way," he added.

“The players who came into the team today don't play regularly at all. Look at Divock, Shaqiri, they did fantastic, we played Adam, Milly, everyone is contributing and we need everyone.

"Divock loves derbies! He was fantastic. If you look at the goals they were quality, you know. For him to score those goals is outstanding and for us very important. Shaq was fantastic. He's been unlucky with the injury he had but he has been training very well."

The Reds are next in action against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, whom they have a 14-0 aggregate advantage over from their last four Premier League meetings.
