Tottenham vs Wolves Preview: How to Watch on TV, Live Stream, Kick Off Time & Team News

28 February 2020 20:42

Having seen their top-four hopes dented by a loss to Chelsea last time out, Tottenham Hotspur must win to remain in the hunt with a win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

José Mourinho's men sit in sixth, four points behind the Blues in fourth. A win would obviously keep them in the race for Champions League qualification, but a loss to eight-placed Wolves would see them tumble down the table.

Wolves are just one point behind them, and will come into this game in high spirits after they made it through to the last 16 of the Europa League, with Thursday's 3-2 defeat to Espanyol enough to steer them to the next round.

Team News

Harry Kane's recovery from a hamstring injury might be going well, but he's still nowhere near a return to action, and the same can be said for long-term absentees Son Heung-min and Moussa Sissoko.

Ryan Sessegnon will also likely miss out with his own hamstring injury, but Mourinho will likely be boosted by Érik Lamela's return to fitness. The Argentine has featured off the bench in recent weeks, and Mourinho has said that he expects him to feature at some point in the second half again.

Defender Juan Foyth has also returned to training after recovering from a groin injury, so he will now be available for selection.

Raul Jimenez

As for Wolves, Nuno opted to rest a number of key players for Thursday's clash with Espanyol, so the likes of Diogo Jota and Raúl Jiménez will be raring to go for this one.

However, the same cannot be said of left-back Jonny Otto, who did not play in midweek after picking up an ankle injury. The Spaniard looks set to miss out once more, which will likely give Rúben Vinagre another opportunity – a game against a top team to be a real acid test for the defender.

Predicted Lineups

Tottenham Hotspur Lloris; Aurier, Sánchez, Alderweireld, Davies; Winks, Ndombele; Lamela, Lo Celso, Bergwijn; Lucas.
Wolverhampton Wanderers Patrício; Boly, Saïss, Coady; Doherty, Moutinho, Neves, Vinagre; Traoré, Jiménez, Jota.

Head to Head Record

Historically, the edge in this fixture has usually gone to Spurs, who have won 24 of the 45 matches between these two sides. However, in recent years, things haven't been so simple. The two sides have exchanges wins, draws and defeats, although Spurs perhaps still have the upper hand.

Adama Traore,Jan Vertonghen

This season, Spurs picked up a 2-1 win, but that was only revenge because Wolves stormed to a 3-1 win in December 2018. On any given day, each of these teams could beat the other.

Recent Form

It's been a real rollercoaster ride for Spurs in recent weeks. A 2-0 victory over Manchester City had everyone feeling good, but recent defeats to Chelsea and RB Leipzig have brought the momentum to a halt.

The signs were there during the 3-2 win over Aston Villa, in which Spurs were anything but convincing. It's clear that Mourinho's side are finding it difficult to cope with their fitness struggles.

Fortunately, they are still in touching distance of Champions League qualification, but defeat against Wolves would put that in real jeopardy.

Giovani Lo Celso,Mason Mount

Nuno won't be too worried about Wolves' 3-2 loss to Espanyol, given the team was largely made up of reserves, so he will only be focused on their league form. They are unbeaten in their last three domestic outings, including 0-0 draws with both Leicester City and Manchester United.

Currently eighth, Wolves could rise up into fifth if results go their way, and that's all the motivation they will need.

Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur (22/2) Espanyol 3-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers (27/2)
Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 RB Leipzig (19/2) Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 Norwich City (23/2)
Aston Villa 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur (16/2) Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 Espanyol (20/2)
Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Southampton (5/2) Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Leicester City (14/2)
Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Manchester City (2/2) Manchester United 0-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers (1/2)

Prediction

These are two sides who could beat almost anyone on any given day (or, indeed, lose to anyone) so picking a clear winner is by no means an easy task. Both Spurs and Wolves will be well aware of the importance of taking home the points here, which sounds like a recipe for an enthralling game.

Nuno Espirito Santo

However, Wolves will come into this one feeling on top. Their stars are well-rested, while Spurs' have looked out on their feet in recent weeks. There isn't much between these two talent-wise, but Wolves' fitness could give them a slight edge.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
