Pierre Emile Højbjerg Reveals How He Reacted to Embarrassing 9-0 Leicester Defeat

Pierre Emile Højbjerg has revealed he was left questioning his own ability as a player during the aftermath of Southampton's 9-0 loss to Leicester back in October.

The game has gone down in Premier League history for all the wrong reasons for the Saints. Leicester's emphatic margin of victory gave the visitors the greatest away win ever in the competition's history, and Southampton are yet to really recover, losing their following league games against Manchester City and Everton.

Speaking back in his homeland of Denmark ahead of their international fixtures against Gibraltar and the Republic of Ireland, Højbjerg admitted he had to ask himself some big questions after the demoralising defeat.

He said, as quoted by BT“I was left with a feeling that it was really, really embarrassing. You are really embarrassed. Then you also ask yourself a little if you deserve to be where you are."

Højbjerg elaborated on the loss in a surprisingly philosophical manner, admitting he's lucky to be in the position he finds himself in, adding a bit of levity to what is ultimately just a lost game of football.

He added: “Although it sounds bad to say (after the result), I’m actually lucky. When I started playing football, the dream was to make a living from it.

"Then there was perhaps a bigger dream of playing in the Premier League and then an even bigger one of being a leader and joining the national team.

“Those were the things I just remembered. That I am still living my dream. Sometimes it’s not fun, and as terrible as it sounds, sometimes the bad days are needed to know what the good days are, but I don’t think anyone needs bad days like those."

Nevertheless, Southampton remain in dire need of Premier League points once the international break concludes, with games against Arsenal and Watford on the horizon.
