Newcastle Decide Not to Pursue Hull Star Jarrod Bowen in January Transfer Window

Steve Bruce has indicated that Newcastle will not make signing Jarrod Bowen a priority in the January transfer window.

Bowen was signed by Bruce during his stint at Hull City, but did not make his debut until 2016, the same year that the Newcastle boss left Humberside due to the fact that he did not see eye-to-eye with club owner Assem Allam

The 22-year-old has since impressed during his time in the Championship, scoring 11 goals in 17 appearances this season.

Although Bowen has been in good form, Bruce has indicated that Newcastle's priorities lie in midfield despite the worrying goal return from the Magpies' front three. Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron have one goal and two assists between them this term, which won't be the return Bruce expected from £77m worth of players.

The Newcastle boss believes that a quality midfielder will be the key to Newcastle's success, rather than an in-form Bowen, who is scoring goal after goal in the Championship. Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson is currently scouting midfielders in South America.

Bruce said, per Shields Gazette: "We have six centre-backs, three right-backs, but are a little bit short in midfield areas. So we’ll have a little look at that, and you’re always looking to add that bit of quality, wherever it is, and see if we can add.”

Jarrod Bowen

Hull manager Grant McCann does not expect to keep hold of the talent for much longer, and believes that as long as the Tigers have Bowen in their ranks, they will continue to score goals and the 22-year-old's price tag will increase.

He said: "What will be will be. We’re just delighted to have him so far. We just want him to continue playing and enjoying his football here like he is."

The English forward is out of contract at the KCOM Stadium in the summer, with a number of Premier League teams keeping tabs. However, Hull have the option to extend his contract by 12 months.
