Liverpool Support Calls for Investigation Into Unexplained Migrant Worker Deaths in Qatar

Liverpool have supported calls from human rights activists to investigate a spate of unexplained migrant worker deaths in Qatar.

The Reds travel to the country next week in order to compete in the Club World Cup against the likes of Flamengo, Hienghene Sport and Monterrey.

The competition acts as a warm up as Qatar prepare to host the World Cup in 2022, but the oil-rich nation have attracted criticism for their treatment of migrant workers who are building stadiums for the tournament.

In October the Guardian revealed that hundreds of migrant workers were dying of heat stress after being made to work in scorching 45 degree heat.

Due to this, the Fair/Square human rights charity requested that Liverpool make a statement expressing concern about labour rights abuses in Qatar.

The club's CEO, Peter Moore, has responded to that request in a letter that called upon the country to investigate any unexplained migrant worker deaths related to the construction of World Cup stadiums.

"Like any responsible organisation, we support your assertion that any and all unexplained deaths should be investigated thoroughly and that bereaved families should receive the justice they deserve,” Moore wrote to Fair/Square officials Nicholas McGeehan and James Lynch.

“Furthermore we also believe that employees should be treated with fairness and respect, which is why we adhere to our own anti-slavery policy and why we are committed to paying the real living wage, among various measures of this kind.

"These are the standards that we set for ourselves and by which we would hope to be judged given they fall within our own remits and responsibilities."

Despite this strong stance, Moore also tempered any idea that the Reds would politicise their trip to Qatar to compete in the tournament.

"We remain a sporting organisation and it is important that we are not drawn into global issues on the basis of where our involvement in various competitions dictates that our fixtures take place," the Reds CEO stated, as reported by the Guardian.
