Vecino had emerged as a potential United target in recent days, but Inter are believed to have turned down the Old Trafford club’s offer of a loan deal.
According to Sky in Italy, the two sides of the table were left unable to agree on the exact conditions of a potential loan and Inter therefore said no.
The possibility remains, however, that Vecino could yet be on the move before next week’s transfer deadline as he is now part of discussions with Napoli over an exchange for Brazilian midfielder Allan.
Vecino, 28, joined Inter from Fiorentina in 2017 following previous loans at Cagliari and Empoli. He played 71 times in his first two seasons at San Siro and started all five of Uruguay’s games at the 2018 World Cup 18 months ago.
So far this season, Vecino has played 17 times for Inter in all competitions and has been in and out of the starting line-up in Serie A games.
But rather than move to Manchester, he looks set to stay in Italy if he goes anywhere.
Signing Allan in exchange for Vecino would represent more major business for Inter coach Antonio Conte this winter. The Nerazzurri have already signed Ashley Young and remain in talks for deals over Christian Eriksen and Victor Moses.
As for United, midfield remains an area in desperate need of strengthening. The protracted Bruno Fernandes saga remains ongoing, but with Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay still missing through injury, signing just one player is unlikely to do much in the way of fixing the problems.
The club is also without the injured Marcus Rashford and have failed to win a single Premier League game in which he hasn’t scored this season.
