Ex-Leicester Boss Nigel Pearson Leading the Race for Watford Job

06 December 2019 16:48

Former Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson is one of the leading contenders for the vacant Watford job.

The Hornets parted ways with Quique Sanchez Flores for the second time on Sunday, with the Spaniard failing to turn the club's fortunes around this season after taking over from Javi Gracia - who was sacked in September.

And now, according to The Times, Pearson is one of the names under consideration to succeed Flores at Vicarage Road, with Watford rock-bottom of the Premier League table after 15 games.

Lommel SK v OH Leuven: Proximus League

The 56-year-old, who's believed to have held talks with Watford officials already, has been out of work since February after he was sacked by Belgian side OH Leuven - where he spent one-and-a-half years.

With players reportedly wanting a British manager to be brought in, Pearson certainly fits that profile. Since his first job as a manager in 2008, Pearson has taken charge of Southampton Leicester (twice), Hull and Derby - with his greatest achievement in management certainly being his Championship-winning season with the Foxes in 2013/14, before guiding them to a miraculous survival in their return to the top-flight the following campaign.

Recent spells, however, haven't been so jubilant. At Derby, he lasted only 12 games, while at OH Leuven he struggled mightily in his second season at the club.

Chris Hughton

Along with Pearson, Watford are also believed to be interested in former Swansea boss Paul Clement and ex-Brighton manager Chris Hughton, while Quique Setien is also an outside possibility.

Pearson, however, is the overwhelming bookies favourite.

Nonetheless, it'll be a difficult role for whoever takes charge. The Hornets have mustered just eight points this season and are already seven points adrift of safety. With Hayden Mullins expected to oversee their game at home to Palace on Saturday, the Watford hierarchy will be hoping to get their next man in for the trip to Anfield the following Saturday.
