Christian Eriksen Insists Uncertain Tottenham Future Is Not Behind Slump in Form

Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen claims the ongoing uncertainty over his future at the club has played no part in his dip form.

The 27-year-old's future in north London has been the talk of the town for around a year or so, with persistent speculation over a possible move to Real Madrid or Manchester United dogging him and the club as a whole.

Talk of his future, on the surface, looks to have affected his performances on the pitch, with Eriksen facing a backlash from supporters for being well below his best for Tottenham this season.

However, speaking to local media (via TeamTalk) ahead of Denmark's Euro 2020 qualifiers with Gibralter and Republic of Ireland, Eriksen insists that the club have full confidence in him, and instead claimed that poor decision making was behind his less than impressive showings.

“I feel 100% that Tottenham has complete confidence in me. There is not that big a difference, except that I play a little less this year," he began. “I don’t feel there is a connection between my contract situation and the fact that I haven’t played as many matches.”

“I might take a little more chance than certain other positions on the pitch. Of course, there are mistakes, and the decisions taken must also be carried out correctly. There may have been a little bit missing.

“I’ve been in the right situations. I just haven’t taken the right decisions. It’s a bit about the sharpness that is missing. This is something I have to work on myself.”

Eriksen has previously expressed his desire to a seek new challenge, presumably in the hope of attracting a bid from Real Madrid, but a move has so far failed to materialise, despite report after report suggesting Los Blancos will launch a cut-price move.

He is free to discuss a move at the end of the season, with foreign clubs at least, in January, and 90min understands that Tottenham are resigned to losing Eriksen, be it in the winter transfer window or at the end of the season.

The Lilywhites may also lose Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen for free next summer, with both players yet to negotiate extended terms at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
