Nigel Clough remained at Burton this season, rather than make an emotional return to his spiritual home in Nottingham because he did not want to leave his employers “in the lurch”.There would have been a sense of vindication at this victory, but he was in no mood to celebrate. That is not because of any sense of misguided loyalty. Clough is a football pragmatist and has built his Burton side in his own image. Leapfrogging over his former club and pushing Forest to within two points of the bottom three gave only a fleeting sense of pleasure, before the realisation that “we could have been in the bottom three if results had gone the other way”.
