Formed in June 1989 by supporters of the former league club Newport County (Mark 1) after the demise of that club. The first club was expelled from the Football Conference in the 1988-89 season, having been relegated from Division Four the previous season. It had been a member of the Football League between 1920 and 1931, and again from 1932 to 1988.
