Duke ensures victory for his King

Bottom club Northampton pulled off a shock 2-1 win at promotion hopefuls Newport to give caretaker-boss Andy King his first success since Aidy Boothroyd's sacking.

Goals from debutant Hallam Hope and Darren Carter clinched the points for Northampton, while goalkeeper Matt Duke saved Newport midfielder Andy Sandell's late penalty.

Northampton almost opened the scoring after 12 minutes when Antonio German's deflected cross hit the crossbar and bounced off the goalline.

On-loan Everton youngster Hope then gave Northampton the lead on his debut with a good finish after 29 minutes.

The 19-year-old almost grabbed a second nine minutes later but headed wide from six yards.

County drew level in first-half injury-time when Harry Worley rose to meet Robbie Willmott's corner with a powerful header after 47 minutes.

But two minutes after the break the Cobblers were back in front thanks to a stunning 25-yard drive from Carter.

Sandell had the chance to equalise for Newport in the 87th minute when David Moyo fouled Lee Minshull in the box, but his penalty was saved by Duke.
