Why Did Kinnear Never Deny The Story?

You may remember the article which alleged that Joe Kinnear ...

... tried to sign Shane Ferguson from Birmingham City even though he is already a Newcastle United player on loan.

Alan Oliver quoted a nameless ‘City source’ as saying: "Ferguson had a particularly good game that night and Joe Kinnear told one of our officials he was interested in signing him.’

"At first our guy thought he was joking but then he realised Kinnear did not know Ferguson was already a Newcastle player."

This was swiftly followed by many other stories where further quotes supposedly made by Kinnear to Birmingham officials were alleged to have been passed by ‘sources,’ and in one or two instances they were even claimed to have been passed on by a ‘director’ at the Midlands club.

However the story is nothing new, it started as a rumour on a Sunderland fan message boards several weeks before Oliver picked up on it.

It was on Sunderland message board ‘Ready to Go’ in a posted on October 4 which read:

"Allegedly Joe Kinnear was at Birmingham’s game the other night, he asked manager Lee Clark, I like the look of your left winger what’s his name, Clark said, Shane Ferguson, he’s on loan from Newcastle!"

Although there has been NO real substantiation of it at all, Kinnear never came out to say it was bollox!

IDEAL FOR CHRISTMAS

MAGPIES IN EUROPE -

HARVEY TO PARDEW

The new version of "Magpies In Europe" will be launched next week.

Although NUFC are not talking to the Chronicle or Sunday Sun ... we are!

And the full story is expected to be in newspapers within the next two weeks.

The official new title is "Magpies In Europe - Harvey To Pardew" and is an up-dated version of "From Antwerp To Zurich" - which includes the 14 Europa League fixtures we played last season.

The 280-page book features match reports from the 134 European matches Newcastle United have played, starting with the memorable 4-0 win over Feyenoord in 1968 on our European debut.

Included are stats and the figures you would expect, but also each away fixture has the remarkable experiences of individuals who travelled to watch the matches.

Introduction by "Big Bad" John McNamee, part of the Fairs Cup winning team of 1969.

It is a fascinating history that every Newcastle United fan will enjoy.

And with a limited print-run, make sure you order a copy.
