Toon big to go down? Don't bet on it - Newcastle are following in the footsteps of Man City, Forest

Another football giant has fallen. Newcastle United, the black and white face of a proud northern city, will play in the Championship next season. St James' Park will welcome the likes of Blackpool,Doncaster and Swansea in 2009-10, while the league battles of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool will be confined to television screens in the city's bars and pubs. When Alan Shearer spoke of the 'implications' of relegation, he didn't just mean the loss in terms of finance, players or morale. The Championship is a highly competitive league and has little regard for reputation - just look at the plight of Charlton, Norwich and Southampton this season. Newcastle are certainly not assured of bouncing straight back up to the top flight, but will they 'do a Leeds' or can someone turn the club around and restore pride to Tyneside? Sportsmail looks at some of the 'big' clubs who have crashed out of the Premier League since its conception in 1992.It's a long way back up - just ask Leeds United.
