Smith pledges Magpies future

Former England international Alan Smith has committed his future to Newcastle United, having recently been linked with both Everton and Middlesbrough.

The 28-year-old has made just 37 appearances for the Magpies since his transfer from Manchester United in the summer of 2007, having suffered a number of injury problems since moving to Tyneside.

However, Smith is determined to prove his worth to the Magpies as soon as he overcomes an ankle problem which has sidelined him for the whole of the season to date.

He told the club's official website: "There was speculation about going to Everton, but that was never the case.

"I just want to make that clear - I never wanted to go anywhere. That's also been the case recently when I was linked with Middlesbrough.

"As soon as I spoke to the manager he said I was in his plans and I wanted to stay because I've got a lot to offer this football club.

"Newcastle is the place where I want to play my football and I have got a point to prove to a few people."
