Smith denies Ferguson offer

Rangers have denied fielding an offer from Newcastle United for influential skipper Barry Ferguson.

Magpies boss Joe Kinnear had spoken of his wish to bring the Scotland midfielder back to the Premier League, with Ferguson having previously endured a tough time with Blackburn Rovers.

Kinnear had said on Friday: "I have enquired about Ferguson, but we will wait and see what the outcome is.

"We are finding it difficult to bring certain players from clubs. Our bids haven't been accepted so far."

However, Smith remains adamant that no formal offer has been made for 30-year-old schemer Ferguson.

He added: "If the comments are accurate then it is strange because as far as my chairman, my chief executive and myself are concerned, there has been no contact with Newcastle or any other club regarding Barry."
