Shearer waits on injured duo
23 Apr 2009 - 09:30:59
Newcastle United boss Alan Shearer does not think Joey Barton or Steven Taylor will be fit enough to feature in Monday's vital relegation battle against Portsmouth at St James' Park.
Taylor limped out of Sunday's defeat at Tottenham with an ankle injury while Barton has been sidelined since January when he suffered a broken metatarsal.
Shearer told United's official website: "Joey Barton hasn't returned to full training yet but should do over the weekend.
"He's doubtful for the game as is Steven Taylor. But we're not giving up hope on anyone."
Meanwhile, Michael Owen will not be dropped, despite his poor recent form, according to assistant manager Iain Dowie.
Dowie said of Owen, who has not scored for over three months: "Michael's goal record stands up to scrutiny with anybody.
"He's used to this. People only talk about him when he doesn't score. We didn't get a lot of opportunities in the game at Tottenham, apart from the one from Obafemi Martins in the closing stages.
"Michael's worked his socks off in all three games we've played. His work-rate is fantastic and he's covered so much ground.
"He's doing all the things that are right and one thing is certain - if chances come his way, he scores.
"We know that Michael has quality in abundance. In training this week and last week, he's come up with finishes that other strikers simply can't do."
