Shearer staying focused

Alan Shearer has admitted he is not thinking about the financial cost of relegation from the Premier League. Newcastle's destiny is out of their hands as they head into the final game of the season against Aston Villa on Sunday, although Shearer is confident of beating the drop. He is remaining focused on the on-field matters he can control rather than the potential implications of going down. Varying estimates suggest the cost of relegation is somewhere between £35million to £65million, which would do untold damage to the value of a business in which owner Mike Ashley has invested a total of around £250million in his two years at the helm. But Shearer insisted: "Funnily enough, at this moment in time, I am not interested in the cash implications. Important"I am not important in this, Mike Ashley is not important in this. What is important is the football club. "That will always be bigger and better than any one individual. "Hopefully, I am standing on Monday morning talking about Newcastle as a Premier League football club. That's the aim." Shearer's short-term deal with Newcastle comes to an end with the game at Villa and speculation continues to mount regarding his future at the club. But the former striker is not dwelling on such things at this point in time, saying: "We have now got a chance to save Newcastle - that's the important thing. "Anything else can wait, and anything else is irrelevant."
