Shearer happy to win ugly
17 Apr 2009 - 14:29:40
Interim Newcastle United boss Alan Shearer has admitted he doesn't care how the points are won just as long as the Magpies secure enough to avoid relegation.
Shearer has seen his relegation-threatened charges fail to win either of the two games since he took the helm last month.
The Magpies travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and Shearer has conceded that points not performances are now required with his side languishing down in 18th place in the table.
"Points are the most important thing," he said. "I believe in trying to play the game the right way, if there is a right way, but I don't really care to be honest.
"As long as we get more points than the other three at the bottom between now and the end of the season, I don't care how they come."
Meanwhile, Shearer has backed an out-of-form Michael Owen to hit the goal trail and fire the Magpies to safety.
"Right now, Michael needs a goal like all strikers do, but one thing we know is that he won't shy away from trying to get them," he continued.
"We would rather have Michael in our team than somebody else's, put it that way.
"I wouldn't bet against him having a big day in the last six games."
