Shearer: 'Harry Can Do A Sir Bobby At QPR'
Alan Shearer says Sir Bobby Robson saved Newcastle from relegation when he first joined the club ... and he says Harry Redknapp could save QPR.
Alan Shearer: "He has some job on his hands but I am convinced he can do it.
"Having seen QPR this season coupled with a quick glance at the league table it looks an impossible job. I would say difficult, but not impossible.
"I know from personal experience how situations can suddenly turn around with the change of manager.
"In the 1999-2000 season at Newcastle we were rock bottom under Ruud Gullit.
"The camp was unhappy, the football was poor, I wasn’t scoring and we were staring at a season fighting off relegation.
"Then Gullit got the sack and Sir Bobby Robson came in.
"Shortly afterwards we had beaten fellow strugglers Sheffied Wednesday 8-0 and were suddenly flying finishing the season 11th.
"Where there was previously a miserable dressing room there was suddenly fun and banter again.
"Sir Bobby came in and simply cheered people up.
"Now I know what people are going to say — ‘you’re earning x amount per week why should you need cheering up’.
"Sometimes however that is just what it needs to get things going again.
"He also did a very simple thing with me.
"I couldn’t understand why my goalscoring had stopped and neither could Ruud Gullit.
"Sir Bobby told me I had been playing with my back to goal too much.
"He turned me 90 degrees so I was side on and now running onto balls.
"People often think it needs miracles, when sometime the answer is starring you in the face.
"Perhaps Harry can do that with Djibril Cisse because he can score goals, he just isn’t.
"Having said all that I was faced with a task of keeping Newcastle in the Premier League with just eight games of a season left.
"I couldn’t do it.
"There were too many cliques in the dressing room and the players were not good enough.
"I wish I had longer but I didn’t so it doesn’t always work out."
