Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce is hoping to hold off interest from a number of Premier League rivals and win the race to sign Chelsea defender Geremi.
Geremi, 28, has reportedly been given permission to speak to the Magpies and Allardyce is hoping to persuade the Cameroon international to move to St James' Park.
Allardyce has already concluded the deal to land Czech international David Rozehnal, while Brazil World Cup winner Edmilson is expected to arrive from Barcelona to form a new-look defence next season.
"Geremi is something we would like to pursue, but many other clubs in the Premier League will be doing exactly the same thing as Newcastle," he admitted.
"Hopefully we can persuade him - if we get the opportunity - to join this football club and not the others who will be chasing him as well as us.
"It is a long way from done, but there is an interest there and hopefully we can progress it over the next few days."
