Roeder rues missed chances
23 Oct 2006 - 10:56:10
Newcastle United boss Glenn Roeder was left to rue a number of missed opportunities as his side lost 1-0 against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.
The Magpies were made to pay for their profligacy five minutes from time, as Yakubu headed home the only goal of the game and Roeder had no complaints.
He told the club's official website: "Sometimes in football you pay the price for not making the most of your chances.
"We had some glorious opportunities to score, especially in the first half, but we didn't take them.
"It is a cruel game at times, and that just proved how important it is to put the chances away. They came back to haunt us, there's no doubt about that.
"We played well, particularly in the first half, but we go home with nothing. I certainly can't fault the effort of the players and they deserved more than that."
"We can lie on the canvas and wait for the count of ten, or we can get up and fight on and that's what we will have to do now."
Meanwhile, the Magpies have been linked with a move for Wigan Athletic's England Under-21s left-back Leighton Baines.
