Roeder rubbishes Duff talk

Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder has dismissed talk linking former Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea star Damien Duff with a move to Tottenham.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international only moved to St James' Park last summer and played 20 games before picking up a knee injury that has restricted him to only one substitute appearance in the last two months.

Roeder told the Magpies' official website: "We've read the reports of Spurs wanting Damien Duff over the weekend but we've heard nothing from them.

"In any case they must know they're wasting their time. Why would we sign Damien Duff in the close season and then sell him on before that season is over?

"We're trying to build a good squad here at Newcastle United and Damien Duff is very much part of our plans."

Meanwhile, young striker Carl Finnigan is on the verge of signing an 18-month contract with Falkirk.

The 20-year-old failed to make a first-team appearance for Newcastle but was a regular goalscorer at reserve and academy level.
