Roeder keen to sign Davies
22 Jan 2007 - 13:31:29
Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder hopes to sign Curtis Davies at some point this year, but accepts that he may have to wait until the summer before bringing the West Brom defender to the north-east.
Roeder is desperate to bolster a leaky Magpies defence that has already conceded 32 goals this term, and has targeted Davies as a possible recruit.
"Getting top-class young English defenders like Curtis Davies is proving a tough nut to crack," he told the Evening Chronicle.
"I have to say he's one of the players we've targeted in the January window, but if we don't get him he has to be a possibility for the summer."
Meanwhile, reports suggest Shay Given could be sidelined for a month with the groin injury he sustained in Saturday's 2-2 draw with West Ham United.
The club has not confirmed the news, but Roeder said after the Hammers game: "Shay will have a scan on Monday morning.
"It's hard to find the words to describe somebody who hardly ever missed a game in five seasons but suffered a shocking injury, ironically, at West Ham that required an operation, and now he's damaged his groin.
"We're just fortunate to have a goalkeeper in Steve Harper who is undoubtedly of Premiership class, but we just hope Shay is not going to be out a long time."
