Roeder eyes new keeper

Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder hopes to sign a new goalkeeper shortly following the news that Shay Given is expected to be sidelined until the beginning of November.

Steve Harper deputised for Given in the midweek defeat at Liverpool but, with Dutch youngster Tim Krul the only other senior goalkeeper on United's books, Roeder is keen to add another shot-stopper to his squad.

"It makes sense to look for another goalkeeper," he told the club's official website.

"It's always good to have goalkeepers around the place, you can use them in practices, so it would make sense if we can find one to bring the numbers up to three again for Terry Gennoe to work with while Shay is injured.

"We have to find someone who didn't have a contract after the window closed. We're working hard and we've had half a dozen names thrown at us.

"Most of them haven't been what we've be looking for. Some weren't good enough and, if they were once good enough, they're not good enough anymore.

"But there's one that's very interesting, and we'll follow that up in the next couple of days."
