Parker has drop fears
30 Oct 2006 - 10:16:50
Newcastle United captain Scott Parker is concerned that the club could become embroiled in a battle to avoid relegation unless results pick up soon.
Saturday's goalless draw with rock-bottom Charlton Athletic left Glenn Roeder's side only one position and two points above the bottom three but Parker is convinced there is enough quality in the squad to move clear of trouble.
"The performances are certainly there but the points aren't," said the former Charlton and Chelsea star. "It's a bit of a worry but we'll keep going.
"The Charlton game was the best we've played for a long while and I include last year in that. If the game had ended up 4-0 everyone would have said 'deservedly so' but that's the way it's going for us at the moment.
"Are we in a relegation fight? Yes of course, that's the reality. We're near the bottom of the table and it isn't looking good.
"We could go through the season saying we're playing well and not winning games, but that wouldn't keep us in the league. We're not going to kid ourselves, we're in the results business.
"Obviously the legend that Alan (Shearer) is, you're going to miss him. But we have the players in the squad who can help with that.
"When the transfer window shut we knew we were light in the striker department and it's showing, but that's the hand we've been dealt. We have to get on with it."
