Pardew hails matchwinner Ameobi
Published : 26 Aug 2011 08:00:36
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew praised Sammy Ameobi for the extra-time winner which carried his team past Scunthorpe and into the second round of the Carling Cup.
The Magpies trailed to Chris Dagnall's 14th-minute opener at Glanford Park but Ryan Taylor fired in his second free-kick in as many games on 80 minutes to force extra-time and substitute Ameobi then proved the match winner.
Pardew said afterwards: "I've been saying privately he could threaten (a place in) this first team. He had a couple of cameos at Chelsea at the back end of last season, he's got a great brother who will keep his feet on the ground and great parents."
He added: "He was terrific tonight and it was a fabulous goal. He's a different player to his brother - his feet are electric at times."
However, Pardew was unimpressed with his team's first-half display, adding: "It's a tight pitch and they are an organised side who gave us a lot of problems in the first half - but we were cheap with the ball and didn't really look like we were up for the game.
"Sometimes it's difficult to get the attitude of the players right - they almost expect things to happen sometimes - and we were lucky in some respects to be only 1-0 down at half-time.
"But in the second half we were terrific and could have got two or three, we really had them on the back foot."
On Joey Barton's possible transfer to QPR, Pardew explained: "He's been down there and is going to take some time about the decision he makes.
"If he comes back he knows me and him have great respect for each other and we'll carry on."
