Owen targets Reds victory
03 Mar 2008 - 13:42:30
Captain Michael Owen believes Newcastle United are capable of upsetting Liverpool in their next match despite suffering a crisis of confidence following a dismal run.
The Magpies travel to Anfield on Saturday still looking for their first win under recently-returned manager Kevin Keegan.
Saturday's 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Blackburn Rovers was a 12th consecutive league game without a win for the ailing Tyneside club, who are now just three points above the relegation zone.
But despite their dismal recent run, Owen believes the Magpies are capable of leaving Anfield with all three points.
"It doesn't get any easier, going away to Anfield, but if we can play like that (against Blackburn), we've got a chance," he told the club's official website.
"After Liverpool, we've got some games which are going to be vitally important against teams who are in and around us, so we need to take that performance and build on it.
"We've played well under the new manager in spells, but that's the first game where we've really played well for the whole game, so we'll take the positives out of that.
"It was a cruel end. We had plenty of chances, myself being the main culprit.
"I probably had more chances in that game then I have in the last ten, so it's frustrating not to get one and frustrating not to get at least a draw. We deserved to win.
"But there are positives even though we're nearer the relegation zone now and we've lost another game."
