Owen offered bumper deal
19 Aug 2008 - 08:11:13
Newcastle United are reported to have offered Michael Owen a new bumper contract in a bid to tie the striker to the club beyond this season.
The 28-year-old England striker is out of contract next summer and would be able to talk to other clubs regarding a free transfer move in January.
However, reports claim the Magpies have offered Owen a £140,000-per-week long-term deal in an effort to keep him at St James' Park.
Owen has started just 37 Premier League games since a £16million move from Real Madrid three years ago.
The former Liverpool striker has seen his spell in the north east marred by injury, but the Magpies board are desperate to keep him at the club as they look to secure a return to European football.
Owen has again been linked with moves away from Tyneside this summer with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City the latest clubs rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services.
