Nolan seals Magpies switch
30 Jan 2009 - 12:26:56
Newcastle United have received some rare good news during a transfer window full of disappointment after completing the £4million signing of Kevin Nolan.
The former Bolton Wanderers captain has signed a four-and-a-half year deal at St James' Park after being given permission to talk to the Magpies on Thursday evening.
Nolan came through the academy at the Reebok Stadium and made a total of 345 appearances during nine years in the Wanderers first team.
"It's all happened so quickly but it was an opportunity I couldn't say no to," Nolan told the club's official website.
"I can't wait to play in front of these fans every week and I'm really looking forward to the next four-and-a-half years."
Nolan's arrival is the second piece of business completed by manager Joe Kinnear following his previous capture of Denmark international Peter Lovenkrands on a free transfer.
However, the rest of the window has been a frustrating one for Kinnear after losing a number of players to injury and fighting off interest from several Premier League clubs in other key members of his squad.
Midfielder Joey Barton is facing eight weeks on the sidelines with a broken metatarsal, while Michael Owen could be out of action for two months with an ankle injury.
Meanwhile, long-serving goalkeeper Shay Given is expected to join Manchester City after revealing his unhappiness at St James' Park.
Kinnear has also become embroiled in a public war of words with disgruntled midfielder Charles N'Zogbia, who claims he won't play for the Magpies again while he is manager.
