MOTD Pundits Stun Toon Supporters
Mark Lawrenson's praise of referee Howard Webb on MOTD last Sunday stunned many viewers, considering he got two goal decisions sadly wrong.
Papiss Cisse's "off-side" goal was obviously ONSIDE and Sunderland's third was clearly OFFSIDE.
Webb has gone from the World Cup final referee overseeing Spain and the Netherlands to a League One contest between Colchester and Shrewsbury in less than three years.
In terms of relegation for referees, Webb's fall from grace is fairly spectacular.
The Professional Game Match Officials board have denied that Webb is being punished, despite reports that they were unhappy with Webb's handling of the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park.
A PGMOL spokesman said: "Howard Webb did not have a bad game at the weekend and he certainly hasn’t been punished.
"This game was chosen for him weeks ago and has nothing at all to do with the Newcastle game. People have not checked this out with us, put two and two together and decided to draw their own conclusion."
It is far from the first time that Webb's refereeing has been criticised, and indeed the worst blunder of his career came at the 2010 World Cup final when he decided not to send Nigel de Jong off for the frankly staggering 'tackle' on Spain's Xabi Alonso that you can see at the right.
