Moncur backing for Shearer

Newcastle legend Bob Moncur is convinced Alan Shearer is the man to bring the good times back to St James' Park. Shearer will send his side into battle at Aston Villa on Sunday with their Premier League status hanging by a thread. He will do so a little more than a fortnight short of 40 years since Moncur lifted the club's last piece of silverware, although a trophy drought which has stubbornly refused to come to an end in recent years will be the last thing on Tyneside minds this weekend. However, the former skipper, who flew out to Barcelona on Thursday to bring the Inter Cities Fairs Cup he hoisted above his head on June 11, 1969 back to the north-east for anniversary celebrations next month, believes Shearer's services must be retained whatever happens this weekend. Moncur said: "Talking about winning trophies seems a bit strange at the moment when we are third from bottom and facing the ultimate test on Sunday. But I honestly think that whether Newcastle can get through this or not, Alan is the man to keep the club going the right direction. "We are all really impressed with him, and any suggestions he will go in the summer won't go down well with people up here."
